Popular Culture

Popular cultures are the things that classify people in a society, for example:  tastes, attitudes, behaviors and beliefs.  Popular cultures, known as pop culture, are the attitudes and perspectives shared by the majority of a society.  The attitudes and perspectives are about food, sports, television, fashion, films, global influence, toys, advertising, music, electronics, etc.  (Browne, P. & Browne, R.B. 2005).
An understanding of popular culture is relevant in a business environment because it helps you be able to relate your product or business to the majority of society.  It is important to know how to market and advertise your product to interest the needs of society.  This type of understanding helps promote products, socialization techniques on how to think, feel and what is important.  (Popular Culture 2013).  Currently, in my present career as a case manager, popular culture is used to help simplify and relate to the public by allowing easier access to individuals when applying for benefits with the use of electronic applications and over the phone interviews.  My future career and growth with Job and Family Services will continue to embrace the use of pop culture by supervising the use of a call center to eliminate face to face interviews, and the use of paper files.

An example of a pop culture artifact would be the television show, The Walking Dead.  This is a good example of pop culture as the show has received awards such as, Writers Guild of America Award and the Golden Globe Award for Best Television Drama Series.  The show has attained the Nielsen rating for receiving 12.4 million viewers making it the most watched drama series in basic cable history.  This show has taken the popularity of zombies in today’s culture and has marketed video games, DVDs, sound tracks, apparel, toys, commercials advertising for food and beverages, facebook games, itune products, and ipod and ipad games.  Currently the zombie craze is extremely popular and growing momentum.  (Bibel, S. 2013).

  1. Angela I think your answer to what popular culture is is spot on. I also like the artifact you picked to represent popular culture. I agree the zombie craze is right up there with vampires and other supernatural beings. This was a good topic to choose for an artifact! Great job!

  2. Hi Angel,

I think you did a nice job writing your blog. There were a couple of grammar/spelling errors, but other then that you did a great job! I work for a Community Mental Health Center in Indiana and think you are absolutely right about case managers needing to understand popular culture in order to help their clients. I have never seen the television show "The Walking Dead," but it sounds like several people enjoy the show based on the awards it has won. You are right, the idea and artifact of Zombies is becoming more popular in movies and video games!
